“Therefore
if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:36 NKJV
President
Franklin Roosevelt’s famous four freedoms speech outlined basic principles that
he wanted to assure Americans would be theirs. They were freedom of speech,
freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Those are things
we have come to expect as Americans, but no political ruler can guarantee them
and many have tried to undermine them. They are, however, things we are
absolutely promised in Scripture by the sure declaration of God.
No
one can ever stop us from freely speaking to Him. If our mouths were sewn shut
we could speak to Him with our heart and mind. No one can take away our freedom
to worship Him. If our churches were all closed we could still worship Him as
we should every day, sincerely from our heart of love and thankfulness that He
is our God. No one can abrogate our freedom from want for He has said, “The
Lord is my Shepherd, I’ll not want.” All the promises of His care and love are
certain until we are called into His presence with thanksgiving. No one can
take away our freedom from fear for the King of the universe has said, “Lo, I
am with you always.”
Today
we celebrate the freedoms we have as Americans. They are things we have come to
expect, but they are things that rulers are and will try to undermine. No man
can undermine the promises of God. He has sent His Son to free us from sin and
death. He has given us His Holy Spirit as the guarantee of things not seen. If
we know Christ as our Savior then we are truly free indeed.
Dear Father, Thank You for our nation that has long stood for the freedoms named in our constitution. Thank You so much more for the freedoms that are ours forever in the Name of Your beloved Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
