Needed Immediately: Warrior Supporters!

And Deborah, a prophetess, judged Israel at that time.” Judges 4:4
Has there ever been a time that hasn’t been a difficult time? We think of the “good old days” and forget that life expectancies were short, diseases weren’t curable, and things we take for granted were unheard of. There have been periods when things seem to have been better, but it wasn’t the norm. In Israel that was also true. There were brief periods when all was well and long periods when it wasn’t.
Deborah lived in a really bad time, a time that God wanted to make good, and she was to be his vehicle. She would support God’s work, undergirding it with her wisdom and God given gifts. That kind of time still exists. God has called his people to undergird those who go into the fight for truth. God wants all the Deborah’s of His church to support with prayer, love, and compassion those workers who strive daily in the ongoing fight against the devil. Deborah is our example to support God’s soldiers in daily spiritual warfare.

Dear Father, Give us all hearts like Deborah to support those who strive for truth. Amen.

The Trophy Wife

“He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.” Judges 1:12
We have all heard the term “Trophy Wife”. She is that woman of extraordinary public grace, poise, and beauty that makes every head turn when she enters a room. She is remarkable and memorable. As Helen of Troy, she has the face that launches a thousand ships. But Helen was an adulteress and is the basis for one of the great Greek tragedies. While we don’t know much about Achsah, the daughter of Caleb, who was given as a trophy to a military victor, we do know about God’s definition of a “Trophy Wife”.
Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” There is the trophy wife. She is virtuous, conscientious, loving, and caring. She loves God and her family. Men brag about their trophies, and God said men should brag about her; “Her husband also praiseth her.” Gentlemen, the best trophy we have is the godly woman God gave us. Let us never cease to praise her with our lips.

Dear Father, Let me give praise to the trophy You have given me. Amen.

Our Past is Passed Under the Blood of Christ

They went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.” Josh. 2:1
Thirty-five years ago this spring I was preaching a revival service in a small town. There was a lady who lived right next door to the church who had never entered the church, but she came that night. She was a combination of Rahab and the woman at the well. But someone invited her, and according to her it was her first invitation ever, to come to our church that night. She sat right in the front row and glared at me throughout the service. When the invitation was given she was the only one to come forward.
She softly whispered to me, “I want to be saved!” Did God reject her for her past? No. Did God tell the spies that Rahab was unworthy to be saved? No! Rahab the harlot got her name in the genealogy of Christ. The lady that night got her name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and she became a great worker in the church. Jesus is in the business of saving sinners!

Dear Father, We rejoice that Christ’s invitation is open to all sinners. Amen.

An Equal Inheritance

And Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters.” Numbers 26:33
There are many cultures and various religions where this circumstance, that of having no sons, would result in financial loss to the daughters of the family. But God is concerned with all His children, not just the male ones. So, Moses took the daughter’s concern directly to God. What will we do with these women? Do they have rights? Can they inherit property? Are they considered equal citizens? Moses didn’t have an answer, so he asked God.
God said, “Thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance.” Wow! Women were really important to God. There was no searching around for a cousin or uncle or distant relative. God said, “The inheritance is theirs.” This isn’t just true of property; it is also true of spiritual inheritance. Christ said, “Come unto me ALL ye that labor and are heavy laden.” Women are just as bound in sin as men and need the spiritual inheritance of Christ equally with others. And, praise God, they are given it.

Dear Father, Thank You for giving an equal inheritance to all Your children. Amen.

The Importance of Women's Ministries

And Miriam took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her.” Ex. 15:20
Praise God for women who are active in the church! I am not sure I have an accurate count of all the women’s groups we have in our church that are actively serving Christ in a variety of ways. Some have taken up needles instead of timbrels and are aiding the needy in our community and around the world with their gifts. Some have taken up cooking pots instead of timbrels and are helping to spread God’s word while feeding the hungry. All of the women’s groups are praising God in one manner or other with the things they have set their hands to do.
God doesn’t demand that women hide under cloaked veils in order to worship Him. He adds to Scripture this account of Miriam spontaneously leading other women to publicly proclaim the glory of God. God values the input of women into the ministries of His church. We should praise God for their activities and their devotion to their Savior.

Dear Father, Support with your grace the ministries of the women in our churches. Amen.

A Mother's Mission

Jochebed bare him Aaron and Moses.” Exodus 6:20
Jochebed was another woman who practiced civil disobedience. She is also a woman who demonstrated great practical wisdom and skillful planning. Do you suppose that Moses’ mother would have placed him in just any old spot on the Nile? Do you think she would have risked Miriam’s life in an area full of Nile crocodiles? Was it a random chance that Pharaoh’s daughter just happened to choose that place to bathe on that particular day? That is just a few too many coincidences.
Jochebed knew what she was doing. She was playing on the sympathies of another woman. She was counting on the other woman’s need of a wet nurse. Why was Miriam so quick to make that offer? But more than all of that, she was counting on being able to raise her son to know the Lord, and she went to great extremes to get it done. She was wise in preparing her children to become the next generation of godly people in Israel.

Dear Father, Help us remember to place the spiritual needs of our children foremost. Amen.

Christian Civil Disobedience

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them.”    Exodus 1:17
Can obedience to God bring us into civil disobedience? While my book “The Christian Citizen in Modern America” deals with the subject at more length, the simple answer is “Yes”. The midwives in Exodus and Rahab and Esther all committed a form of civil disobedience. They didn’t protest or march in the streets; they didn’t commit acts of vandalism or destroy property; they simply disobeyed the civil authorities who gave commands to disobey God.
There was a time for the people of God to stand and be counted when the issue at stake was a clear violation of God’s law. It wasn’t a matter of interpretation; it was a matter of God or man. God rewarded these midwives with families of their own. God rewarded Rahab in the ancestry of Christ. God rewarded Esther with the lives of all the Jews. These women didn’t act unseemly, nor did they debase the name of God. They obeyed God and He noticed their work.

Dear Father, Help us to love Your word enough to obey it when it is difficult. Amen

The Gentile Bride

And Pharaoh gave Joseph to wife Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.”
Gen. 41:45
Joseph, Rachel’s eldest son, turned out a lot better than Benjamin. There are over one hundred ways that Joseph is a picture of Christ. I required my Bible college students to find 50 Old Testament examples and 50 New Testament correlations of ways he did in order for them to pass their Christology class. Joseph’s marriage to Asenath is one of those examples. She is a Gentile, a pagan, the daughter of a pagan priest, separated by birth from the family of God.
But Joseph accepts her as his bride. He, the picture of Christ, took a Gentile bride. He welcomed her and bore children through her. Two tribes of Israel are named after the sons she bore to Joseph. His father accepted them and called them by his own name. That is good news for all Gentiles. We are accepted in the Beloved, called by His Name, and made part of the Father’s family forever. What a beautiful picture.

Dear Father, Thank You for welcoming me into Your family. Amen.

God Makes Your Story Complete

And Judah acknowledged them, and said, ‘[Tamar] hath been more righteous than I’.” Gen. 38:26
I am an author; I like to tell stories. Some stories are simple short ones, but the most fun ones are long and involved and go in fifty direction before the end. The story of Judah and Tamar is one of the apparently fifty direction stories we find in Scripture. A Canaanite woman is married to Judah’s son; she is deceived by Judah, then she tricks Judah by playing a harlot. Quite a story! Why is it even there?
There could be many reasons, but the most absolutely sure one is found in Matthew 1. In verse four it says, “Judah begat Perez of Tamar”. There is that obscure story, and it is found right there in the genealogy of Jesus. Tamar is Jesus’ distant past grandmother! Do you ever feel that your story is insignificant? That there are parts you don’t want to tell? Do you know Christ? Then your story is not insignificant; all the parts are important to Him, and so are you.

Dear Father, Thank You for giving me a story and a Savior to share it with. Amen.

A Godly Wife: God's Gift to Men

And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated . . .” Gen. 29:31
Leah was Rachel’s older sister. She wasn’t nearly as comely as her sister and she had to squint to see. But Jacob was tricked into marrying her, since her father didn’t seem to think much of her either. Plain lonely Leah, a sad story with a happy ending. But the ending took a long time to come. Jacob HATED his wife. Now that is just despicable! But what Jacob hated, God loved. Now that is just wonderful!
Leah would bear Jacob six sons, one of whom was Judah from whom Christ would come. Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin whose descendants were nearly wiped out of Israel for defending homosexuality. Sadly, Jacob loved Rachel’s children more than Leah’s, but God chose Leah’s children instead of Rachel’s. In the end, Jacob asked of Joseph (Rachel’s son) to give him a promise that he would be buried with Leah when he died! I don’t know if Rachel ever got right with God, but Jacob finally figured out what was right with Leah.

Dear Father, Give us tender and loving hearts toward your wonderful gift, our wives. Amen.

All that Glitters is not Gold

But Rachel was beautiful and well-favored.” Gen. 29:17
All that glitters is not gold and all that is beautiful is not good. We tend to think differently than we should about appearances. God told Samuel not to look on the outside but the inside. Jacob was not willing to do so. Rachel was all it! Beautiful in face and well-favored in form. What more could a man want? That is the man’s problem; ladies you have your own. If you think that what Rachel had is what you need; think again.
Rachel was a thorn in Jacob’s side! She was pampered and spoiled. She was gorgeous on the outside and empty on the inside. She was an idolater by birth and didn’t abandon them when she got married to God’s man. She was a thief and a liar. But, oh boy, was she beautiful. Proverbs says, “Favour (charm) is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” Men, seek the right thing, a godly woman; and ladies, seek to be the right thing.

Dear Father, Help us to see as You see and want what You want. Amen.

Will You Accept God's Proposal?

And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, ‘Wilt thou go with this man?’ And she said, ‘I will go’.” Gen. 24:58
In Acts 16 we find the Philippian jailer falling at Paul’s feet and saying, “What must I do to be saved?” Being told to “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ”, he does so immediately. There is a prelude to that account. Paul was in that man’s prison and while there he was giving constant testimony about and praise to Christ. The jailer’s question to Paul was not random. He had seen and heard and then he believed and obeyed.
Rebekah has the same story. She met Abraham’s servant who told her about the father and the son. He told her that the father wanted her to marry the son. He gave her ample proof of the fact. When asked whether she believed it or not, to go or not to go, she believed and obeyed. She married the son of the promise. What a wonderful testimony she is of God’s grace.

Dear Father, Thank You for inviting us to marry your Son and may we be faithful to invite others also. Amen.

God's Time is the Right Time

And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.” Gen. 21:3
How long do we seemingly have to wait for God’s promises and how many utterly foolish wrong decisions do we make while we wait? Sarah foolishly told Abraham to take Hagar and have a baby with her. Abraham foolishly agreed. They didn’t want to wait for God to do what He said He would do. They tried to “help God out” and made a real mess of things. Notice again that both man and woman made this mess together.
But God would fulfill His promise. He always does. Just because we sin, it does not overrule the power of God to do right. We cannot “speed God up” or cause His plans to fail. God forgave Abraham and Sarah. Then he blessed them with great joy, so much joy that they named their son Isaac, which means laughter. God’s plan was to make them laugh with joy, and He did.

Dear Father, Help us to understand Your promises are always in the present tense and that Your pleasure is to bless Your people, men and women, with joy. Amen.

Remember Lot's Wife: Differently

{Lot’s} wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.” Gen. 19:26
Gentlemen, why do we always blame the “little woman” for our ills? We too often remember Eve’s disobedience and forget Adam’s collusion. We remember Lot’s wife and forget Lot. Scripture says that Adam sinned first! Scripture says that Lot looked toward Sodom, moved near to Sodom, and then dwelt in Sodom.
What we need to see is that we have a responsibility as men. We need to lead our homes in a path of righteousness. God has entrusted to men, if they are in the home, to lead in Scriptures, to lead in an example of righteousness, to lead faithfulness to God at church. Our churches are full of women who have to do what their husbands won’t do. They have to take responsibilities that men should take and won’t. Then they are accused of being “uppity” when they do. Adam sinned; Lot lusted; men are busted. As we look at ladies who failed, let us remember that men were leading the way by falling behind in their spiritual roles.

Dear Father, Help us all fully fill the spiritual responsibilities we are given. Amen.

God's Equal Opportunity Covenant

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.” Gen. 6:18
Have you ever done a study of pagan religions or false cults? In many of them there is only one way for women to be saved. A Muslim woman cannot go to Paradise unless she is married to a Muslim man. A Mormon woman cannot gain the highest celestial halls unless she is married to a Mormon man. Those are just two examples; have fun researching others.
But God is different. He made a covenant with Noah and his wife, and his sons and their wives. The covenant was equally made with man and woman both! The only Man that a woman needs to get into heaven is Jesus, but a man cannot get there any other way either. God does not exclude women; he loves them and offers them the same grace as men. Thank God that we live under the truth of His Word and not the errors of false religions and cults.

Dear Father, Thank You for saving us all the same way – through Jesus. Amen.

The Promise to the Fallen

It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Gen. 3:15
Our verse today is taken from God’s curse upon Satan. Satan would damage the seed of woman, but the seed of woman would prevail and slay the serpent. It is not the seed of man that will gain the victory over sin and death, over curse and pain, over sorrow and suffering. It is the seed of woman – the Christ of Virgin Birth.
How badly did Eve feel to fall into temptation and then be accused by her husband as well? God did not spare her His indictment for believing Satan instead of Him. But what we do see is that as she was the first to give into temptation, she is also the first to hear a promise. God is like that. He wants us to know that he cares for us. We all fall into temptation, if Eve hadn’t Adam would have. But with sin there is always the promise of the Savior. God has never changed that pattern. Because we sin He sent His Son to die for us. The promise continues.

Dear Father, Thank You for Your love and fulfilled promises. Amen.

Women's Lib Has It Wrong

And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone’.” Gen. 1:18
The women’s lib movement has it all wrong. God elevates women to a high plain. How high? Man could not get by without them! Man wasn’t born to live in a cave by himself but to live in community. God’s wonderful creation of all nature was not sufficient for man’s needs. He needed a person comparable to him, to help him, come alongside him, and be a partner with him. That is what God means when he says a “help meet” for him. Man needed another person, not an animal. He needed one like himself but different. One to help, but not act in the same way as man.
Throughout Scripture God gives great recognition to women and their ministry to this world, the world he gave to Adam and then said that Adam needed help taking care of it. Unlike other religions who debase women and view them as property, God said women are of great quality and value to man and to God.

Dear Father, Help us all to understand the great value You have placed on women. Amen.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

One man esteemeth one day above another: another man esteemeth every day alike.” Romans 14:5
We are in the season of Lent; whether we do or don’t practice it, it is still in the season of Lent. Some esteem these days and some do not. Here is the sad part, some condemn others for practicing it and some condemn others for not doing so. Paul said that no one is going to hell for practicing a day or for not practicing it. Since it has no effect on our eternal salvation, Paul adjures us to not make a fuss about another person’s practice of a day or of a season.
Paul was actually quite clear that we are not to condemn our fellow believer for a great many things that we may or may not like. He even declared that nothing is “unclean of itself”. Our forms of Christian practice should be ours to do, or not to do, with full conviction of their rightness if we do them for the Lord. This Lenten season let us remember not to judge, but to love, and our Christian brothers.

Dear Father, Receive the worship we give you from our hearts. Amen.

To Get Ahead, We Have to Get Behind

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.” Romans 3:14
This verse carries great historical significance for the early church. Saint Augustine sat in his garden reading the Scriptures when he heard this verse being read on the other side of the garden wall. Suddenly he understood. Christ is everything! Everything! He stopped toying with the idea of Christianity and committed himself to Christ and His service. Christ, not self, was to be the consuming fire of the believer’s life. It is what Paul said in Philippians, “For me to live is Christ” and again in Galatians “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me and the life I now live I live by the faith of the Son of God.” Or yet again it echoes what Christ said in Gethsemane, “Nevertheless, not My will but Thine be done.” Oh, what power we would have if we let go and truly let Christ live through us.

Dear Father, Help me to surrender myself to You each day. Amen.

Our We Dues Paying Christians?

Render therefore to all their dues.” Romans 13:7
Many people are dues paying members of some organization or another. To remain as a member they must pay their dues. Fortunately Christians are not held to that high standard of some worldly organizations or many would be declared non-Christians for failing to pay their dues. That might sound harsh, but why don’t we pay our dues? Do we respect our leaders? The Bible says not to speak evil of our leaders and that applied to Caesar as well as Caiaphas, both very ungodly men. Civility and respect are part of our dues.
There are millions who have never heard the Gospel message. Jesus assigned us the task to tell others. It is their due to hear the Gospel message. God told Malachi to let God’s people know that we owe Him our tithes and offerings. That is His due. The two great commandments, love God and love our neighbor both reflect the dues we owe to God and man. We need to take stock at how we are doing at rendering to others their dues.

Dear Father, Help me to remember the debt I owe to man and God. Amen.

Peace Makers or Hate Mongers?

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” Romans 12:18
We live in a hostile world. It isn’t just hostile to Christians; it is just hostile. Violent crime is rampant all over the world. Terror reigns in many countries. Christians get angry and start to shout back. But wait! That is against what Jesus taught and what Paul commanded. Peace is to begin with us. We are not to add to the cacophony of confusion and anger. Clearly we are not to be those who promote violence or destruction because we have been offended by someone.
The world is in crisis. When a crisis happens we have people who are called “First Responders”. They pick up the pieces of the crisis. Christians are supposed to be “First Responders” to a world in crisis. We are to help alleviate the stress of life, absorb the pain, and offer the solutions. We are not to contribute to the problem. We are to be peace makers not hate mongers. That power does lie within us. He is called the Holy Spirit.

Dear Father, Help me to be a peacemaker in my world. Amen.

How bad isn't bad enough?

Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” Romans 12:9
We have become rather accustomed in our lives to “go with the flow”. We do object to some things that we find to be bad; it is just that we keep redefining what is “bad”.  My grandmother was a shut-in for the last six years of her life. TV was her constant companion. Sunday mornings she had a full list of TV preachers. She rarely ever watched evening TV except a game show or two. Every time I turn on the television I wonder what Grandma would think of what is on now.
What was evil when she died forty years ago is now so tame that it would be a laughing stalk for modern viewers, yet Christians watch it without batting an eye. Why? Because it isn’t as “evil as it could be”. God’s message to us is simple: Abhor evil things! Cling to good things! We cannot be lights in an evil generation if we love the same evil that they love. God calls us to cling to that which is good.

Dear Father, Help me to be discerning and to hate evil and love good. Amen.
