“And
she said unto him, ‘My father, do to me according to that which hath proceeded
out of thy mouth’.” Judges 11:36
How much do we all value our own
goals, dreams, and aspirations? They are part of the fabric of who we are. They
help define what we do and how we will live. If someone gave us an alternate
plan would we respond like Jephthah’s daughter, “So be it”? This girl’s father
had made an oath to make her a living sacrifice to God. There would be no more
dreams, goals, desires, or ambitions of her own. She was dedicated to the altar
of God for life!
Romans 12:1-2 tell us that we have a
Father who has plans for us, a direction He wants us to go, service He wants us
to render. He doesn’t ask us if we had those plans ourselves. He says they are
His plans. Are we like Jephthah’s daughter and so, “Sure! I will do it!”? Or
are we still insistent on our goals. We can all take a daily lesson from
Jephthah’s daughter.
Dear Father, We hesitate too much to
say “Thy will be done”. Forgive us our selfishness. Amen.
