“Abraham
said, ‘Would you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?’” Genesis
18:23
I hear people all the time talk
about “bargaining” with God. “If you,” they say, “do this then I will do this.”
Of course, bargaining is done between equals and we are not equal to God, so
this type of bargaining is pointless. But Abraham did dicker with God in a
different way, a way we can use as well. He asked for nothing in return, only
for God to show His righteousness and His justice. Abraham pleaded with God to
uphold His grace.
Notice that Abraham didn’t ask for
punishment on the sinners of Sodom, God had already declared He would do that.
Abraham simply asked for God to show mercy in His judgment, to spare the
righteous who were caught up in the midst of the wicked. It is easy to ask God
to judge, it is much harder to ask God to do for others what He has done for us
– show His immeasurable grace.
Dear Father, Thank You for being
gracious to me, a sinner, and help me to show Your grace to others still caught
up in sin. Amen.
The Friday Benediction
Until Monday, my friends, may the good God envelop
you with His grace; may you prove the common confession of faith, “I believe in
the holy Christian church and in the fellowship of the saints”, and may you be
enriched with joy and hope as you exercise that confession this weekend. Amen
