“And
he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”
Genesis 15:6
The underlying doctrine of all
Scripture is that we are justified by faith and not by works. The foundational
statement for that teaching is found in this verse. God made a promise. Abraham
believed it. God then declared Abraham righteous. By grace we are saved through
faith.
Notice that God did not declare him
righteous when he allowed Lot to choose first. He was not declared righteous
when he built an altar. He was not declared righteous when he refused to take
the king of Sodom’s money. He was declared righteous when he believed God.
After being declared righteous
Abraham walked even more closely to God than he had before. He didn’t let his
righteous standing deter his devotion or obedience to God. He went on to take
even greater steps of faith, including offering up his own son. His faith
produced works of righteousness. This is why Abraham is called the father of
the faith.
Dear Father, Thank You for the gift
of faith, help me to use it for Your glory. Amen.
