“And
Judah acknowledged them, and said, ‘[Tamar] hath been
more righteous than I’.” Gen. 38:26
I am an author; I like to tell
stories. Some stories are simple short ones, but the most fun ones are long and
involved and go in fifty direction before the end. The story of Judah and Tamar
is one of the apparently fifty direction stories we find in Scripture. A
Canaanite woman is married to Judah’s son; she is deceived by Judah, then she
tricks Judah by playing a harlot. Quite a story! Why is it even there?
There could be many reasons, but the
most absolutely sure one is found in Matthew 1. In verse four it says, “Judah
begat Perez of Tamar”. There is that obscure story, and it is found right there
in the genealogy of Jesus. Tamar is Jesus’ distant past grandmother! Do you
ever feel that your story is insignificant? That there are parts you don’t want
to tell? Do you know Christ? Then your story is not insignificant; all the
parts are important to Him, and so are you.
Dear Father, Thank You for giving me
a story and a Savior to share it with. Amen.
