“They
went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.”
Josh. 2:1
Thirty-five years ago this spring I was
preaching a revival service in a small town. There was a lady who lived right
next door to the church who had never entered the church, but she came that
night. She was a combination of Rahab and the woman at the well. But someone
invited her, and according to her it was her first invitation ever, to come to
our church that night. She sat right in the front row and glared at me
throughout the service. When the invitation was given she was the only one to
come forward.
She softly whispered to me, “I want
to be saved!” Did God reject her for her past? No. Did God tell the spies that
Rahab was unworthy to be saved? No! Rahab the harlot got her name in the genealogy
of Christ. The lady that night got her name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life,
and she became a great worker in the church. Jesus is in the business of saving
sinners!
Dear Father, We rejoice that Christ’s
invitation is open to all sinners. Amen.
The Friday Benediction
Until Monday, my friends, may the good God envelop
you with His grace; may you prove the common confession of faith, “I believe in
the holy Christian church and in the fellowship of the saints”, and may you be
enriched with joy and hope as you exercise that confession this weekend. Amen
