“And
Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to
him, Isaac.” Gen. 21:3
How long do we seemingly have to
wait for God’s promises and how many utterly foolish wrong decisions do we make
while we wait? Sarah foolishly told Abraham to take Hagar and have a baby with
her. Abraham foolishly agreed. They didn’t want to wait for God to do what He
said He would do. They tried to “help God out” and made a real mess of things.
Notice again that both man and woman made this mess together.
But God would fulfill His promise.
He always does. Just because we sin, it does not overrule the power of God to
do right. We cannot “speed God up” or cause His plans to fail. God forgave
Abraham and Sarah. Then he blessed them with great joy, so much joy that they
named their son Isaac, which means laughter. God’s plan was to make them laugh
with joy, and He did.
Dear Father, Help us to understand
Your promises are always in the present tense and that Your pleasure is to
bless Your people, men and women, with joy. Amen.
The Friday Benediction
Until Monday, my friends, may the good God envelop
you with His grace; may you prove the common confession of faith, “I believe in
the holy Christian church and in the fellowship of the saints”, and may you be
enriched with joy and hope as you exercise that confession this weekend. Amen
